The story of the Scottish thistle and how it became a national symbol of
Scotland dates back to the Battle of Largs in 1263AD. Viking invaders
arrived by night and took off their footwear in order to take their quarry
by surprise. The Scottish clansmen were alerted to the danger when one
of the invading Norsemen stepped barefoot on a thistle.
The Scots won the ensuing battle!
The Order of the Thistle was founded in 1540 and is theforemost
honour of Scotland.

A vision of a white cross in the sky one day in 832AD gave Scotland its patron saint – and its national flag.
The Scots king, surrounded and vastly outnumbered by his enemies, on seeing Andrew’s cross in the sky, prayed to the Saint for deliverance.
The Scots won and the white cross set against the blue of the sky became Scotland’s national flag.

The Barra Cross is unique in combining, on the one stone a Christian cross and pagan runes. The original is in the Scottish National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh but a full size replica can be seen in the ancient church of Cille Barra at Eoligarry on the island of Barra.
Two sided, Nordic Runes on one side, Christian interlace cross on the other,
“a testimony to the islanders who not only kept their faith intact through
the darkest days of Norse occupation but succeeded in having it
acknowledged and accepted by their pagan conquerors.
“ After Torgeth, Steiner’s daughter, this cross was raised”.

ABERLEMO CHURCHYARD CROSS
A historic Scottish cross, from the churchyard of Aberlemo, in Angus in
the North East of Scotland,
The Aberlemo cross commemorates the victory of the Picts over the
Angles of Northumbria in 685AD. The Picts disappeared from historical
records when the Scots from neighbouring Dal Riada took over to form
the Scottish nation.
Very little remains of Pictish culture so these churchyard stones have a
very special place in Scottish history.

IONA CROSS
Design taken from a stone found in the ancient monastery on Iona
founded by St Columba. St Columba arrived on Iona from Ireland in
563AD.
(the historic book of Kells is thought to have travelled in the opposite
direction, having originated in Iona before being taken to safety in
Ireland to escape Viking raids on the monastery).
