Barra Hebridean Woolhouse Shop An Taigh-Cloimhe

(ann tie cloy)

The Hebridean sheep, once a rare breed is now appearing in increasing numbers in the islands. This rare breed thrives with an organic lifestyle and the special qualities of their fleece enables them to withstand the severest Atlantic storms.

The Hebridean Woolhouse was born when two girls, with a business background, Dorothy and Theona, married two Grimsay fishermen/crofters and saw the opportunities in Dorothy’s husband’s flock of the Hebridean sheep.. The business took off, mainly by mail order, bridging the gap from crofter to customer but the arrival of a young family caused the Woolhouse founders to do a rethink - they wanted to enjoy their babies rather than travel to trade fairs and exhibitions to promote their product. So a business born in 1997 found a new owner who is true to the original ideals and outlets for this unique product are to be found in the Hebridean islands, the sheep’s natural habitat. You won’t find these goods on the High Street!
